Functional Behavioural Assessments

Our Functional Behavioural Assessments help families and support teams understand the why behind behaviours, uncover underlying needs, and create compassionate, practical strategies that support wellbeing across home, school, and community settings. We view behaviour as communication – often reflecting sensory needs, emotional states, communication differences, developmental needs, stress, or environmental mismatch.

Using a neurodiversity-affirming and person-centred approach, we focus on understanding behaviour within context rather than attempting to suppress or “fix” it. Our goal is to help create environments where the individual feels safe, understood, regulated, and able to thrive.

The process begins with a supportive intake session to better understand the person’s neurotype, communication style, routines, sensory profile, strengths, support needs, and recent experiences. We then complete a Functional Behavioural Assessment through collaborative discussions, observations, review of relevant reports, and, where appropriate, play-based exploration or observation within natural environments such as home, school, or community settings.

The assessment explores:

  • triggers and stressors
  • sensory and environmental factors
  • communication and emotional regulation needs
  • patterns in behaviour
  • unmet needs and barriers to participation
  • factors contributing to distress, dysregulation, or overwhelm

Recommendations are practical, strengths-based, and tailored to the individual. These may include:

  • Proactive regulation supports
  • sensory and environmental adjustments
  • communication supports
  • co-regulation strategies
  • routines and transition supports
  • skill-building strategies for emotional regulation and participation
  • guidance for parents, educators, and support teams

Our reports are written to align with NDIS Behaviour Support and Functional Assessment expectations and clearly outline support needs across daily life domains. We incorporate input from parents, carers, educators, therapists, and the individual themself to develop a shared and meaningful understanding.

Where appropriate, we can also provide ongoing Positive Behaviour Support under NDIS funding, including:

  • development and implementation of Behaviour Support Plans
  • parent and support worker coaching
  • collaboration with schools and allied health teams
  • emotional regulation and communication support
  • monitoring, review, and capacity building across environments

A Comprehensive Behaviour Support Plan (BSP) under the NDIS may also include a Functional Behaviour Assessment, proactive support strategies, environmental recommendations, regulation supports, and ongoing review in line with NDIS Commission guidelines. The focus is always on improving quality of life, reducing distress, and supporting participation, autonomy, and well-being.

Costs (NDIS):

  • Initial Intake: $310.05
  • Functional Behavioural Assessment & Report: $3 879.80

Additional ongoing Behaviour Support sessions are billed in line with current NDIS pricing arrangements and may vary depending on the level of support required.
