Autism Assessments

We provide comprehensive, neurodiversity-affirming autism assessments for children, adolescents, and adults. Our assessments are designed to build a deep understanding of each person’s unique neurotype, communication style, sensory experiences, strengths, support needs, and ways of interacting with the world, not simply to determine whether diagnostic criteria are met.

We recognise that autism can present very differently from person to person, particularly in girls, women, high-masking individuals, and people who have spent years adapting to fit into environments that may not naturally support them. Because of this, our approach focuses on understanding the whole person in a respectful, collaborative, and affirming way.

The process begins with a detailed Clinical Intake, where we explore developmental history, lived experiences, current supports, strengths, and areas that may feel more effortful or overwhelming. For children, parents or caregivers attend the intake session only to provide background information and discuss developmental history in depth (without little ears present).

Following this, questionnaires and screeners are completed by the individual, parents, teachers, or other supports where appropriate. These help us better understand areas such as communication style, social connection, sensory processing, emotional regulation, executive functioning, adaptive skills, and daily life experiences across different environments.

Assessment sessions are tailored to the individual and are designed to feel supportive, flexible, and comfortable. Depending on age and presentation, we may use tools such as:

  • MIGDAS-2 – a collaborative, neurodiversity-affirming assessment approach that values authentic communication styles, sensory experiences, interests, and lived experience

  • ADOS-2 – a structured, play-based assessment commonly used with children and some adults to explore communication, interaction, imagination, and social engagement

We value assessment approaches that support identity, understanding, and self-compassion – not pathologising or “fixing” differences. While standardised tools can provide important clinical information, we also place significant importance on the person’s lived experiences, masking patterns, internal experiences, and the ways autism may present differently across genders, cultures, personalities, and life stages.

Following the assessment, clients and families receive a highly detailed, strengths-based report, typically completed within eight weeks of the final session. Our reports are designed to be practical, affirming, and genuinely helpful, providing:

  • A clear understanding of the individual’s neurodevelopmental profile
  • Strengths, interests, and protective factors
  • Areas where additional support may be helpful
  • Sensory, emotional, social, and executive functioning insights
  • Recommendations for home, school, university, work, and daily life
  • Support strategies and accommodations
  • Guidance for parents, educators, and support professionals
  • Recommendations for ongoing supports and services
  • NDIS aligned

Our goal is for individuals and families to leave the process feeling understood, validated, and better equipped to advocate for the supports and environments they need to thrive.

A Medicare rebate (approximately $380) may be available for clients under 25 with a valid referral from a paediatrician.

We also offer ongoing counselling and support through our psychologists and counsellors, reduced-fee options when both ADHD and autism assessments are completed together, and, where possible, flexible pathways to improve accessibility for families.
