Functional Behavioural Assessments

Identify behaviour patterns and create practical daily strategies.

Functional Behavioural Assessments

Our Functional Behavioural Assessments help families and support teams understand the why behind behaviours, uncover underlying needs, and create compassionate, practical strategies that support wellbeing across home, school, and community settings. We view behaviour as communication- an expression of sensory needs, emotional states, developmental differences, or environmental mismatch.

We begin with a supportive intake session to understand the individual’s neurotype, communication style, routines, sensory profile, strengths, and recent changes. This helps us tailor the assessment in a way that honours their experiences.
We use observation, play-based exploration for children, and collaborative discussion to understand patterns in behaviour. This includes identifying triggers, stressors, sensory factors, communication differences, and environmental demands that may impact regulation or participation. Where helpful, we can observe the person within their natural environment to better understand behaviour in context.

We focus on understanding, not suppressing, behaviour. We aim to create environments where the person feels safe, regulated, and able to thrive. Recommendations include proactive supports, co-regulation tools, communication strategies, sensory adjustments, and reducing triggers or overwhelm. Our reports are written to meet NDIS expectations and clearly outline support needs across daily life. We incorporate input from parents, educators, therapists, and the individual themself to build a clear, shared understanding.

Following the assessment, we can provide ongoing behavioural support under NDIS Behaviour Support funding. This may include:

  • Developing and implementing Behaviour Support Plans
  • Coaching parents, educators, and support workers
  • Emotional regulation and communication skill-building
  • Regular monitoring and review
  • Collaborative team meetings to ensure consistency across settings

Our aim is to ensure that each person feels understood, supported, and empowered and that their environments evolve to meet their needs.
